One is that your family members are exceeding society's expectations. As you say most people turn the other way - they're actively making a difference. The second thing is that they're doing it every day. Doing the little things every day is the easiest way to become a hero. Sure, rescuing someone from a burning building will get you there, but making a sacrifice every day and doing the good things qualifies more often. I think you’ve hit on two important parts there.
