Life Plan 101

Throughout our life we plan. We plan for Christmas, our birthday, the weekend. Now is a good time to take our learning from planning those events to creating a life plan. Life plans can be as simple or as complex as needed.

planThere are many types of plans in use, and this one may not be the best plan for you. This plan has a lot going for it though. It easy to follow. It is simple to use, simple to add on to, and simple to take away from as your needs and wants change. You are not locked into using something formal that needs special paper, or page layouts. The main points of this plan are carried in your head, so it is always available to review, use, and revise in the moment.

I think of this as a Plan Of Three. I like the number three because three is a small number and easy to remember and recall. I enjoy the way the number three is integrated into almost all aspects of life. I will leave it up to you to identify the influence and use of the number three in your own life. In this life plan think of each number, i.e., one, two, and three as life markers or placeholders, and not concrete stopping points in your life.

At its simplest, the Plan Of Three comprises three place holders of future life times. The first marker is closest to the present time. The second marker is a medium stage out there somewhere in the future. The third and final marker in the Plan Of Three is as far out as you can visualize your life.

The first marker in the Plan Of Three is your near future. It may be next month, three months, or six months from now. It is a place holder for those everything that will happen soon, or you want to happen soon. The time placement of the first marker is up to you. The amount of time you perceive as your near future is your first place marker in your Plan Of Three.

The second marker in the Plan Of Three is an intermediate place holder for your intermediate future for the completion of your longer term goals. For some the middle marker is three to five years away, for others it may three to five months away. Where your middle point is for you depends on how far you think you can reasonably form a plan for your future.

The third and final point is your far off future. Think of this point as a lighthouse or beacon for your life. It is your conscience, and your direction. It is where you want your life when you are far into your future. This marker guides you and gives your life direction. Every decision and direction you go in your life should be aligned with your third marker. This third marker in the Plan Of Three is a time and place you will never get to. Your life will finish before you ever reach this point. It is a culmination of everything you have done with your life.

Taking a piece of paper or opening a notepad and start now. Here is a simple example:

1. Finish this semester of school or college. Complete something to make myself more valuable to my employer. Finish my plans of improving my business. Lose ten pounds.

2. Start thinking about where I want to work when I graduate. Find creative ways to improve my work life, or my business. Do I want to marry or stay single. Start planning for my life out of school or college.

3. Make decisions that I can look back on with pride. Take on projects or volunteer work that is of value to others. Follow my beliefs. Be honest and true to those within my sphere of influence. Make plans for my retirement. Decide where I want to live the last years of my life.

In each of the steps of the Plan Of Three there are options for sub steps. How many you should have is up to you, but generally three sub items is a good choice, and usually not more than five under each marker of your plan. More sub items becomes to much to manage, and you end up managing your life plan rather than your life.

Feeling Lost in Your Own Life?

directionAt some point in our life we all feel lost. We realize suddenly that we have no direction, plan or even an idea of our future. It dawns on us that we have been going through our days as they come with no thought to each and every day being our future in the making. Now at the moment we realize we have been coasting through our life, we feel lost and are not sure what to do.

Knowing we feel lost, or really are lost in life is the first step in finding our direction from our life compass. We each carry a life compass with us, but at times it becomes lost in our other baggage, and we misplace it.

When quiet time happens take some time away from distractions and think about what you have done with your life to date. What have you done that you really enjoyed? What have you done that you have not enjoyed or even been ashamed of? What have you done that you are proud of? What have you done that you are proud of and you would enjoy doing again?

There is no best path or direction anyone can give you for your life. The best anyone can do is use their life as an example, and provide possibilities you can incorporate into your life. Giving advice should be seen as others suggesting possibilities. In those quiet moments, think about al the possibilities for your future, no matter how silly they may seem at the moment.

None of the possibilities are silly, and all of them are possible. We are curious creatures, and we were made to search, question, and learn until our last breath, so nothing you can think of is outside the realm of your life possibilities.

Once you have a goal or direction in mind, start living your life towards that goal. Is what you are doing right now moving you towards your goal, or does it take you away from your goal? If it takes you away from your life goals is there anything reasonable you can do about it? Sometimes,  we have to take a detour to get where we want to go. If you get detoured, stop and chart out your course, you may be closer than you think.

Life is made up of challenges, both big and small. If there are no challenges in your life, you are either extremely fortunate, or you are flowing with the ebb and tide of life, and have decided that wherever life takes you is okay with you. Having an end goal however means that there will be obstacles in your path, and you will need to learn how to surpass them.

The journey of life is the main source of a full and happy life. Without an end goal and the journey to arrive at the place we wanted to get to so many years earlier is what life is all about. We set our life direction, and it is up to us to make choices throughout our day, year, and decade about whether we are on our chosen path or not.

Determining your life path and changing your mind next week is perfectly normal and is common in many peoples lives. Many multi talented people change their life course many times throughout their life, and live a full and happy life. Be cautious that changing direction often is not holding you in one place.

One caveat though if you wish to float through life and go in whatever direction life takes you. As life’s challenges or conflicts present themselves to you, and only serve to cause you frustration and unhappiness, it may be time to take a different approach or even a different path for your life because whatever you are doing is not working for you.

Make your plan, follow the direction of your life compass, and enjoy the trip. There are no right answers anyone can give you to your life. You are the only person who can decide your life path and how best to live your life. There are no right or wrong answers for your life until you explore the possibilities yourself.

Abundance or Scarcity, Stop Limiting Beliefs

As we go through life, we tend to identify with certain people and and their thinking. For one particular way of thinking there does not seem to be any middle ground as there is in many other areas of our lives. I believe for those opposite of myself and others like me are missing out on most of life’s greatest gifts.

The thinking I am referring to pertains to whether you feel life holds endless abundance, or scarcity and there is never enough. I am part of those who know there is enough for everyone if we choose. No matter what anyone wants or needs, there is always enough.

scarcityThe other side, or the other group believes there is not enough to go around. These folks do whatever they can do to ensure they keep as much as they can for themselves. In most cases it does not matter in the least if the amount they have is more than they can manage or use in their lifetime. What matters to people in this group is they keep as much as they can in their control.

This thinking is most prevalent or obvious in political affiliations. Whatever you think about, whether it is love, money, or knowledge, someone believes the opposite. If you see abundance, they see scarcity. If you share and are generous, they see you throwing important things away, or wasting something precious. They believe there is a finite amount, and it needs to be kept under control or better yet hoarded. Some of the most violent and vicious people that ever walk(ed) the earth believe(d) in scarcity or finite thinking.

If you are part of the group of people who believes there is not enough, who taught you to think this way, and why? This belief is used as a method of control. Perhaps it was used on you in various ways to control your actions as a child. Perhaps you learned from role models who felt the need to control you by reserving those things that cost nothing to give? Perhaps there are reasons deeper or more complex which you may not know what they are.

How much healthier it is to know and believe in abundance. Knowing no matter what, there will be enough for everyone as long as it is freely given, or freely shared. We are all inhabitants of one single earth, and we have access or control of everything the rest of the world needs to survive if not thrive. All we need is to change this scarcity, fear based belief system into one of abundance.

abundanceWe were born in abundance. We were given everything we needed to grow and thrive to the point we are now at. For most of us, our life is very rich and we are very wealthy compared to most of the world, in that we have everything we need and more to live a comfortable happy life.

Thinking abundantly, we know there will always be enough of everything we need. At times it may take more effort than other times, but generally we have no need to worry about not having enough.

Because we are masters of our own personal universe, if we allow ourselves to believe that there is not enough, there never will be. We will be like two children trying to decide who really has the right to one piece of candy. Living our lives in such a limited scope that we will never be open to the life of abundance we could have is a sad state of life. Life will always be a struggle, always on guard, protecting our few hard earned possessions. Life will always be a juggling act, where we have to do more, and be more than the person next to us, to ensure we have enough for us.

Believing in scarcity, is a limiting belief. It limits an individual to being a big fish in a small pond. Believing everything is scarce or limited introduces fear into life. Fear there will not be enough. Fear introduces hoarding, withholding, and other acts of greed into life. Living in the shadow of fear, is at best a meager existence. At best believing in scarcity, and living in the shadow of fear keeps one from knowing that the sun shines on us all equally.

Holdem tips from the new player lane

I see new players in the card room recently. Not a lot of new players, perhaps one every couple of times I play. I imagine these new players are sitting down for the same reasons we all sat down our first time. They want to play Holdem.

We all want to play for different reasons ranging from having fun, to the first stepping stone to the World Series Of Poker, but we are all there just the same. I see the regulars start to salivate at the sight of a new player. They know the likely outcome before the new player is dealt their first hand.

With all the exposure to poker these days someone sitting down for their first time has the opportunity to gain much more knowledge than almost everyone who sat down for the first time before them. There are excellent books, almost daily poker shows, home games, and the internet available as information resources. New players sit down and mistakenly believe they are well armed and ready to do battle.

In my experience the more a new player believes they are equal to anyone at the poker table, the quicker they find they are leaving the table – broke. Here are some of the most common beginner mistakes I observe being repeated over and over. Fortunately for better players these mistakes are not limited to only beginning players.

poker-hand1Respect the limit – It does not matter if you are playing at the lowest limit available in your card room or the highest limit, the limit of the table must be respected. Playing low limits and thinking each bet is paltry or insignificant because of the stakes is a fatal flaw. You have lost before you play your first hand.

Making too many decisions – Playing good poker is boring. There is nothing exciting about playing good poker, making the least number of decisions possible. If you find yourself having to think about what you should do with your hand in each round of play, you are making too many decisions for your level of experience. You will see other players make great plays that were tough decisions, but you are not them yet.

Playing too loose – I suffered and still occasionally suffer from this even though I thought I started out playing tighter than most players at the table. It is a fun to play loose. It is also expensive to play loose. Two things happen from playing too many hands. The first is you find yourself playing in situations where you really should not be playing your hand. The second is playing too loose tends to mean chasing in hopes of having the best hand on the river. For more experienced and knowledgeable players this is a right choice but not for a beginning player. Stick to hands and positions in your charts from your books or other sources.

Rocks and their friend Tom – Poker terminology changes almost weekly but player types never do. Rocks are players who throw away hand after hand, and when they do play, they show down only the best hands. Tom is a brother or sister of most Rocks.

Tom is an acronym for, ‘Tight Old Man’. Tight old men do not gamble much, and most older men and women you sill sit down with are Toms. They have a limited amount of money they can put towards poker. They may be losing players, but they are tight players and can hurt you. When you are in a hand, and a young Rock, or Tom (no matter their sex )enters the pot before you, stop and think. If you do not have a very good starting hand, you are not losing much by throwing it away preflop. If you call you are probably playing against one of the top ten or twenty Holdem hands.

Everyone at the table knows how to play – Many players once they get a few hours of playing time start thinking they are better than most of the players at the table. This is a major mistake. Everyone you have seen from a prior session knows how to play. They may have looked like poor players due to poor cards or frustration, but they may really be the player you should fear the most. Do not let your ego drain your wallet.

One final thought…if you ignore these few pointers as a beginning player because you know better, you won’t be sitting at the table long. You may not play long anyway because Holdem is more complex than it looks from the outside. Only experience can help you, and you need to play as long as possible with your chips at the table. Don’t be afraid of other players when you sit down, but give them your respect, as they were sitting at the table before you, so they know a little bit about the game. Finally, have fun!

Weight Loss Primer

I see a lot of searches for weight loss and dieting for my few blog posts. I looked for and found my eating journal (really notepad entries) from last year, and decided I would post what I have in order to help anyone looking for ways to lose weight.

dietOne great side effect of a diet is you have a lot of energy in general. The downside of a diet is you wake up at night, or at least I did from being hungry. After the first few weeks I became used to it, and it became a normal part of the night. Feeling hungry and getting cravings also is part of the process. I also felt pretty poor the first few weeks, and I was told it is not uncommon to feel ill for the first few weeks.

Reasons for feeling ill ranged from going without food to my body using fat that had bad things stored in it that I either ate over time, or breathed in. What the truth is I do not know, but I became ill feeling at any rate.

One of the things most diet programs also do not tell you is what happens to the fat on your body. I have forgotten the specifics, but generally we do not ‘burn’ fat as the commercials tell us we do, other than in a general sense. Our bodies use the fat for calories of course, but we do not burn it up and it is gone. What happens is the fat is used by our bodies and the remains that our body can not use is converted into water and air.

That sounds pretty simple, writing water and air. What that means in reality is dieting will increase your trips to the bathroom, and it will increase your gas output. Not a big deal, but I thought I would mention it. Also it should be mentioned that what your body uses and discards leaves in the liquid for the most part, and what it can not use is generally solids. So you may notice a change in your bathroom routine while dieting.

Instead of sending a list of seven days eating I thought I made a composite list. I ate almost the same foods every day anyway so it made more sense. My diet mainly came from the the book, “The Thirty Day Diabetes Miracle”. It was a diet that I thought I could maintain which is crucial for dieting. If you find any diet ‘severe’ you will not stick to it.

A few last items: First is the reason for the walnut oil. What I ate was almost zero fat, and our bodies need some fat both for maintenance and to burn fat (or so I was told after weight loss stopped). I was told to get a nut oil that was not cooked or heated. It worked well.

FInally, eating this way is cheap! It is a good healthy way to save money. The walking is crucial to speed up the process, so don’t skip it.

How I Lost 56 Pounds

Weight Loss, Happy Eating, And Celiac Disease

As with any change to your life style, use you own judgment. I am not a health care professional, and have no idea if what I did to lose weight is healthy or safe for you.
Breakfast:

Most days – 1 cup oatmeal, 1 cup pinto beans or other beans, 1 cup blueberries, six whole almonds, 2 teaspoons walnut oil.

Once in a while – Two scrambled eggs or Tofu scrambled ‘eggs’ w/ onions, bell pepper, and chili, two slices Ezekial 4:9 bread toasted w/ almond butter.

Lunch:

Most days: 1 cup 3 bean chili, one serving Rosarita corn chips (about 10), salad w/ lowest fat strawberry dressing, and some days some steamed chicken breast.

Once in while: McDonalds Southwest salad grilled although the Asian salad is about the same, only it has higher sodium.

Ezekial bread and soy burger, corn chips, and fruit

Dinner:

Most days: Lentil, vegetable, pea, beef and barley, or other soup, less than, or about 30 carbs, and fruit, lately a whole pear

Some days: Ezekial bread and soy burger; chicken wrap and ice cream from McDonalds; steamed chicken on tortilla and fruit at home, beef or sockeye salmon, and either asparagus, or peas, and one slice Ezekial bread; two fruits

That’s about it. Sometimes I make the lunch chili and chips into an almost frito pie. Occasionally I drink some soy milk with these meals, although I use soy milk for refrigerator made oatmeal. The people who wrote the book [thirty day diabetes miracle] have a cookbook coming out, though they also have a weeks worth of menus, but I am lazy….

I walk twenty minutes at least after each meal, and on my days off I like to take a four or five mile walk about an hour after eating, and then walk after lunch and dinner. My after meal walks are about 1 – 2 miles, usually closer to 1.2 – 1.5 miles.

Dreamlinux and Debian

dreamlinuxDreamlinux is installed on my Asus eeepc netbook this week. Dream Linux is a distribution coming out of Brazil. Dreamlinux is based on Debian Linux which is one of the largest distributions in the world, so compatibility and software repositories is never an issue.

I started out with a Debian net install which went well and everything installed as it was supposed to. Using Debian it was time to start the tinkering. A few years back, no matter what Linux distribution installed, it took some tinkering. The amount of tinkering Debian needed just to get it to the point of being similar to Dreamlinux, made it a no brainer to download Dreamlinux and install it.

I have mentioned before, there are a number of Linux distributions anyone can request, or if you know how to burn an iso, download and burn to cd. These distributions are what is called a ‘live cd’ which means you can boot from the cd. When you boot from the cd, the version of Linux you are trying out loads and runs, and makes no changes to your computer or Windows.

The advantage of live cd’s in my opinion is they are a free try before you buy plan. If you like the cd you are trying out, it is a simple matter to install it to your hard drive. If you do not like the Linux distro you are trying out, you are out a few dollars from the cd request, or the cost of a cd that you burned yourself.

The biggest advantage to using Linux is the amount of software available once you have a distribution installed on your computer. No matter what your interest, or desire, you can bet a programmer somewhere has made a program that meets your needs. I use cd cataloging software, photo cataloging and photo manipulation software. There is even a Photoshop clone, and an Office clone. Most Linux programs are free or donation ware. So if you find you are using a program and a Linux distribution, you are encouraged to send them a few dollars so they can eat dinner the next day.

As for hardware requirements, if it runs windows, it will run at least ten versions of Linux without having to make any changes. Even if you have an old box sitting in the closet, there is a Linux distribution that will bring it back to life, possibly running faster that it did when you retired it.

I went to the Asus eeepc website and see Asus has released a newer lighter laptop. The specs say it has a 10.2 inch display and weighs about 2.5 pounds. Looks like a hit to me, well if I was looking to upgrade my Asus 1000 hd.

Netbooks and Linux were made for each other. If you run windows and are tired of viruses, defragging and general maintenance tinkering, check out a Linux live cd. You may find Linux and you were made for each other. If you are looking for a laptop, check out netbooks. They are not desktop replacements of course, but how often do you need the cd rom, or the horsepower your desktop has?
