Faith and Belief Puzzle

I received in my email a comment made on another blog, a reply to a post questioning ones belief and religion. While both belief and religion are a personal matter, until recently in most of the world they both were monitored and controlled by people with the power and ability to make ones life most unpleasant up to and including a prolonged and horrifying death if one strayed too far from the center.

In a few areas this has not changed. Even today in some parts of the world people are routinely banished from their villages, relieved of their possessions. Occasionally, body parts are hacked off, and their life taken because their belief system does not align itself with the powers that be. In some cases it is only perception rather than any actual proofs or observations that caused someone to be banished or killed over belief or religion.

Thousands of years ago – to present day in some places in the world, what and how you believe determines whether you will be alive to see the sunrise tomorrow. Possibly your answer may even determine if you will be alive two minutes from now. What luxury we have to ponder our beliefs out loud, and have a hopefully rational exchange of ideas and opinions on them.

We in the Western world, for the most part have it easy. When asked what we believe or profess to believe we have multiple courses of action. We can state our beliefs, we can allude to what we may believe, or we can claim it is personal and applicable only to ourselves, and choose not to share with others. In most situations any of these types of responses are acceptable, and there are no repercussions.

What if there is no wiggle room? What if your beliefs do not agree with the status quo? What if that difference means you may lose your life? What does one do in that situation? Does one publicly profess to whatever those with the power to end your life want to hear, or if one believes differently, do they state their beliefs, and suffer the fate straying from the paved road. What if straying means torture and eventual death?

Brittany’s s blog post , concerns the correctness of her personal belief system; questioning which parts of her belief are correct, and which areas may not be correct. This has been a relevant personal question for thousands of years and will continue to be relevant as long as one group has the power and ability to influence another.

Before jumping to conclusions of our own beliefs and bravery contained therein, I would like to mention the Leader of the Catholic Church. The last Pope after being shot, and now apparently all future Popes, have chosen safety over their beliefs. They have chosen the safer path, being transported through crowds in their protected bullet proof vehicle, affectionately named the ‘PopeMobile‘.

If someone that rooted in their belief system and faith such as the Pope(s) chooses the safer route, how many of us are really ready to put our own wishy-washy half baked beliefs on the line, with the knowledge our public pronouncement of our faith could lead to our death?

I for one know that it is easier to sit in the safety of my home, and say I would do this, or I would do that, knowing that the time should never come when I am doing what I think I would do, knowing my life is in jeopardy whatever my answer may be.

I would like to think that each of us, no matter what our belief system and possibly aligned religion have determined without hesitation what we believe is something we are willing to defend to our death. Settling for less is living a lie of convenience. There needs to be a sliding gauge in place however.

Expecting the same of a twelve year old as we would of an eighty year old is neither practical nor balanced. A typical twelve year old is barely aware of themselves as an individual, let alone what their true beliefs are and why they have them. Whereas an eighty year old has had a lifetime to think, test, and determine what is true for them.

Perhaps it is likely that the eighty year old is willing and ready to put their life on the line for their beliefs, but one would hope they have traveled down many paths before setting themselves on their chosen path.

For most people however, questioning your beliefs is natural and common. Everyone has doubts. Everyone wonders if what they believe is what they should believe. Those that ignore these doubts and questions have lead lives of lies because they never challenged what they believe and tested what they were told.

Bravery and Belief are not one word. Nor is Belief and Blind Acceptance one word. We all should strive to challenge our beliefs and not be afraid to modify them if we find them faulty, or untrue. Whether we are willing to perish for our beliefs is another matter completely and can only be answered by each of us individually.

Grab Bag Beliefs

I had a conversation with a man, I will call Tony. The conversation started among a group of us, about a recent murder where a self proclaimed witch murdered a man. The murder was rather brutal, and from what the news said, was more about not being in control of ones reality than it was about witchcraft.

Tony said he had been told as a child there used to be a lot of witches around here. I mentioned I knew two people who have witches in their families and live in the area. I said witchcraft is alive and well in our state, and has been for hundreds of years, if not longer.

Tony said he is a Catholic and does not believe in witchcraft, the boogie man, old stories, demons, the devil, or anything like that. He said all he believed in is God. Well it is hard to argue with someone about their beliefs. Beliefs are after all are what one chooses to believe, right or wrong.

Tony is partially correct in his beliefs, though he is also wrong in his beliefs. I did not question him further or comment on his beliefs because each of us believes what we want to be true, and we don’t change our opinions until we want to. This does not change the we could be wrongs.

It is impossible to believe in any God, especially a Christian God, and dismiss all other supernatural possibilities as non-existent. That is a major flaw in ones understanding. Especially when a God uses physical and non physical angels and other beings to do work on the earth, and in the heavens.

The greater flaw in Tony’s belief is dismissing everything, such as the Devil, and demons, deciding they do not exist. It would be different if the Christian bible made no mention of the Devil, or demons, but they are in the bible along with Angels, giants, and various other named and unnamed entities.

Christianity is a religion that wraps itself in the supernatural by default. God does not exist in a form anyone can see or touch. If one believes God exists, then one should be prepared to accept other things we can not see or touch also exist.

One last comment made by Tony is a sign of an unbalanced belief system. Tony mentioned that people who practice witchcraft, even though he does not believe in witchcraft, are evil people. I hear this said often in christian religious circles, people essentially saying,  “People not like us are evil”.

These types of people believe there are two types of people in the world. How can people who do something one does not even believe in be evil? Tony should have said misguided, silly, or maybe ignorant, but evil? Where does evil fit in where there is only room for God?

It is interesting how many people decide to define their world. People hold beliefs that are often have conflicts in their very foundations. People see the face of Jesus on a cookie. The outline of Virgin Mary when the sun shines through a room at a certain time. Yet these same people can’t imagine them actually appearing in physical form. For them it just could not happen, God and the Virgin Mary don’t do that!

Yet people often choose conflicting beliefs. Beliefs such as: I choose to believe in flying saucers and ufo’s, but nothing religious. I choose to believe in God, angels, and demons, but not ghosts, or other spirits. I choose to believe vampires exist though no record of one factually exists. I choose to believe even though there are billions of stars and in an untold number of solar systems, though only Earth has life. I choose to believe when I die, that is the end of me, even though I saw a ghost once.

Many of us shut out beliefs we don’t care for. When man went to the moon for example, many people believed it never happened, it was a stage production. Yet those same people put their belief in a pill to cure them of almost any illness. What if the pill isn’t even made of sugar?

Karma

Karma, depending on how open you are to possibilities, and attuned to what really goes on in the world is either nonsense or fact. Karma is one of those life forces net everyone agrees may exist. karma is either real for you or it is not.

What is karma exactly is another question. Some who are familiar with the Christian bible relate karma to a biblical verse(es) about the sins of the father being visited on the sons down to the third generation. Other people think of karma as something that is paid back in your next life for things done or not done in this life. Some see karma as a type of immediate feedback machine. Others see karma as lifetimes of progression to an end state. Of course some see karma as an invention of the ignorant.

For myself and my world Karma is all those things and more. It seems obvious that because we are eternal beings as the bible and most major religions hold to be true, it certainly plausible that what I may do in this live could have consequences that follow me into future lives. Perhaps I am to do, or did something that makes a change to the world of the future. I will be born into a world where I live with the effects of the change I incurred in this lifetime.

karmaOf course believing in reincarnation lends itself to thinking it is viable that what I do, or do not do in this life, is either rewarded or punished in a like fashion in a future incarnation. For example if I were to murder someone, and was found not guilty in a court of law, I am subject to the karmic effects of the murder I committed. On the other hand, if I were to live a saintly life, I will be rewarded in my next life for what I accomplished in this life.

Believing in karma as a function of reaching an end state of perfection brings a belief that I am mobile in each lifetime and either have climbed up or climbed down the karmic ladder. Living a good life in this lifetime moves me up a rung on the ladder when I live the next life. Doing poorly with this life, drops me one or more rungs on the karmic ladder.

Of those who believe karma does not exist except in peoples minds, it is hard to comprehend for those that have a belief system how karma does not play a part in ones ultimate fate. After all one is judged on ones actions and if that is not a function of karma with finality, I am at a loss to think of what may be a refection of karma. Calling a cat a dog does not change the name or nature of the animal.

For myself, I see all these beliefs or reflections of what karma is and how it functions very limiting. We like to categorize everything in our life, placing everything in it own little compartment. Most of the time how we categorize those things in our life makes little difference. With a belief system, or something as dynamic as karma, that is like classifying a brilliant diamond on one facet, ignoring or choosing to be ignorant to the idea that there is more than what we see or choose to see.

How about the possibility that karma is everything and more than I mentioned? What if karma is dynamic, far reaching across generations, and does move you and I up and down the karmic ladder of life, and also provides real time feedback on how we are managing our spiritual life? This more holistic approach is more rational than trying to place something like karma in a little box on the shelf.

Right now, if I am lonely, feeling lost, separated, or life just is not going where I want my life to go, it is immediate karmic feedback on how I am managing my life? Perhaps I am intentionally ignorant, or blissfully unaware that my actions at this moment, or this day, affect how the world interacts with me tomorrow, and how I interact with it? It is so much easier to find an external source for our problems, or life struggles than it is to take some introspective time and determine what we are doing or not doing to create the world we are living in at this moment. Why not take some time to ponder what you personally are doing to make your world a world you want to live in, instead of settling for a world you must endure?

Demons are not fiction

My blog receives a number of hits for Demons. It is probably word of mouth from an earlier post I made. I would not think it would be so popular. I imagine people are looking for things spiritual. What follows is what I believe to be true, and may differ from other sources. I do recommend reading someting better suited for your spiritual growth. This entry may be a little unsettling, or dark, so you may want to skip it.

Demons would not exist without God in a Christian world. If you have no belief in a supreme being, you should have no belief in the existence of Demons as they are a part of Christianity. You cannot believe in God and pretend Demons do not exist. Demons exist, and are as real as you are. If you find this confusing, you have your belief system mixed up, or your logic does not flow correctly. As you can not have day without night, there is not God without Demon’s.

Demons can not be harmed or contained in the general sense of hurting or caging them. You are not going to affect a Demon with anything from our physical world. Demon’s are not overly affected by our physical laws, or rules as they are very different from we humans.

Demons are not the same as say a dog, someone can not really sick one on you as they could an attack dog. In comparison to people, Demons share at least one trait. Just like people there are average Demons, smart Demons, very smart Demons, and there are some Demons who can not function on their own.

To understand the relationship between people and Demons, pretend you have a strong tie to a political party. Demons are part of the opposing party. As in any opposing party, individual views range from indifference to outright hatred of you and your party. Views and action among those in the opposing party also run the gamut of staying far away, to actively seeking out humans to prey upon and feed off of.

God does allow Demons to exist for whatever reason God has. If you go on a campaign or crusade against Demons, you are in essence trying to destroy something God has created, or allows to exist.

For many possible reasons, Demons are attracted to humans, and a very few humans are attracted to Demons. Unfortunately in the end it is the Demon who comes out on top of the arrangement. The lifetime of human experience has a healthy respect for, if not ingrained fear of Demons. There is a good reason for this fear, so heed it. This means stay away from them, or you will be heartily sorry if you live through the experience.

In almost all cases of a Demon wreaking havoc in someone’s life, almost without exception the person involved gave permission for one or more Demons to settle in and make themselves at home. Demons can not harm you unless you give permission somehow. Do not allow yourself be compromised. Just like the commercial, JUST SAY NO!

  • The safest defense against Demons is ignore them. You do that by:
  • Live a life that improves yourself and those around you
  • Live the best life you can
  • Treat those around you at least as well as you treat yourself
  • Make the most of your life, it is the only life you have
  • Stay positive, or as positive as possible

As the saying goes, “It is all fun and games, then someone gets hurt”, don’t be that someone.

If reading this makes you feel funny, it is because your reading this entry has one or more Demons excited by your energy. They are never too far away. To get rid of the attraction you have created, read something that inspires you. Reading something uplifting is a good way to keep things out of your life you would rather not have around. A better way is to try to live a wholesome life other people will want to copy. I recommend some uplifting posts from this blog.
